What to Do If Your School Doesn't Offer the PSAT
Not all schools offer the PSAT, but that doesn't mean your college aspirations are limited. This guide explores alternative options for taking standardized tests, emphasizes the importance of academic performance, and provides tips for crafting a compelling college application.

It's totally normal to feel a little lost if your school doesn't offer the PSAT. Not every school has the resources to administer this test, and that's okay! The good news is that you still have options to prepare for college and potentially even get a head start on the SAT.

The PSAT is a great way to get familiar with the format of the SAT, which is a standardized test used for college admissions. It's essentially a practice test for the SAT, and it gives you a chance to see where your strengths and weaknesses lie. This information can be super helpful in guiding your study plan for the SAT. Plus, taking the PSAT can make you eligible for scholarships and National Merit recognition, which can be a huge financial boost for college.

Alternative Options

Don't worry if your school doesn't offer the PSAT. There are still ways to get the benefits of taking this test.

  • Take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT): You can take the PSAT at a nearby school or testing center. The College Board website (www.collegeboard.org) has a tool to help you find testing locations and dates near you. Think of it like finding a movie theater – you can choose the location and time that works best for you!
  • Consider Other Standardized Tests: While the PSAT is a great way to prepare for the SAT, it's not the only option. The ACT is another popular standardized test used for college admissions. The ACT and SAT are similar in some ways, but they have different formats and content. The ACT is a little more focused on science and math, while the SAT is more focused on reading and writing. You can find information about the ACT and how to register on their website (www.act.org). You can also utilize Kyros.AI's Tests module to watch video lessons when preparing for standardized tests like the PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP, etc.
  • Focus on Academic Performance: Even if you can't take the PSAT, you can still show colleges that you're a strong student. Focus on getting good grades in challenging courses like AP or IB classes. These classes show colleges that you're ready for the rigor of college-level work. You can use Kyros.AI's Courses module to search and watch video lessons for various school courses. Also, get involved in extracurricular activities and community service. These activities show colleges that you're a well-rounded individual with interests and passions beyond the classroom. Think about joining clubs, volunteering, or even starting your own project. These experiences can help you stand out in the college application process. You can use Kyros.AI's Extracurriculars module to search and explore Summer programs, Club and Organization, Community Services, Competition, Research and Publication.
  • Use Kyros.AI's My Portfolio module to record your school profiles such as courses, extracurricular activities, etc. Resumes can be auto-generated.

Remember, your path to college is unique. Don't be afraid to explore different options and find what works best for you. You've got this!

Preparing for College Applications

Even though you might not have access to the PSAT, there are still plenty of ways to prepare for college applications and make your application stand out.

  • Research College Requirements: The first step is to figure out what colleges you're interested in and what they require for admission. Some colleges require standardized test scores, while others don't. Check out the websites of the colleges you're interested in to find out their specific requirements. For example, if you're interested in applying to MIT, you can visit their website and look for information about their admissions process. You'll likely find that they require standardized test scores. But, if you're looking at a small liberal arts college, they might not require standardized test scores at all. You can use Kyros.AI's Colleges module to search for colleges based on various conditions and view detailed college information like admission, cost, attendance, etc.
  • Build a Strong Application: Even if you don't take the PSAT, you can still build a strong college application. Focus on the following:
  • Write a compelling essay: Your essay is your chance to tell colleges who you are and why you're a good fit for their school. Take the time to write a thoughtful and engaging essay that showcases your personality and your academic goals.
  • Get strong letters of recommendation: Ask teachers and mentors who know you well to write letters of recommendation for you. These letters can provide colleges with valuable insights into your character and your academic abilities. You can use Kyros.AI's Recommendation Letters module to find sample recommendation letters and templates when requesting recommendation letters.
  • Build a compelling resume: Highlight your extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and any other experiences that demonstrate your skills and interests. This shows colleges that you're a well-rounded individual who's engaged in your community. You can use Kyros.AI's My Portfolio module to record your school profiles such as courses, extracurricular activities, etc. Resumes can be auto-generated.
  • Use Kyros.AI's College and Applications module to manage your college lists, and track your application progress.
